forum update

Members of the Forum are going to explore options to set up as an independent organisation. A special meeting will look at the different forms any new organisation can take. (This was talked about in 2019)

We are now a registered charity (as from July 2021) and we are self funded. We aim to help anyone or organisation within our area with any problems that you are experiencing.

Access checklist

A forum member has been working to develop a comprehensive access checklist to use with local businesses to assess their accessibility for people with a range of disabilities and long term conditions.

A smaller group will develop ideas on how to take the checklist forward.

This is still an ongoing project. This is mainly due to Covid and the lack of people that we have to help get all the information needed.

Media update and opportunities

Bridget did an interview as a result of the New Year release with Scarborough TV. We are continuing to look for stories to use with the media and are asking people who’ve experienced issues to let us know if they’re willing to share what happened.

Changing Rooms

Changing rooms are toilet facilities that are equipped with ceiling hists and proper changing tables for all people of all types of disabilities. Toilets that are more accessible by having more room around them. There has been a big push for these to be put all over the country so that no one should ever have a problem accessing what is their right.

There is now a changing room to be put into the toilets at the old indoor pool site at the bottom car park. They is also one at the bottom of St.Nicholas Gardens, The Street and Everyone Active. There is supposed to be one at Scarborough Hospital. This is under review as it was not built to specification. Discussions are still ongoing as to how they will be made accessible without them being misused.

Coventry University access update

No changes have happened as a result of the visit to the Scarborough campus of Coventry University. The Forum agreed to write a letter to the University’s vice chancellor and a forum member is exploring starting a claim against the University.

They now have a portable loop system for all to use.

Date of the next meetings

At the moment all the meetings are on Zoom we hope to have some face to face meetings again soon and will keep this updated. When we do re start it will be at the Friends Meeting House.
